WOODEN WAND “Death Seat” (Young God - YG 44) CD (UPC: 658457004425 - CDWOODEDeat)
***“JAMES JACKSON TOTH, aka WOODEN WAND, is your fearless friend, the stumbling guy who gets himself into
incredibly fucked up situations but comes out shining and lives to tell about it, entertaining you safely and
immensely. You should be grateful. In my view, he's a great American songwriter in full bloom. Most likely you'll
think that's a preposterous claim, and I won't blame you, but you'll be totally, completely, and unforgivably wrong
not to agree. To me, it's obvious Toth is animated with the same spirit that's moved through Willie, Waylon, Merle,
and Hank. Not to say he sounds like them, but his songs unfurl with a similar casual authority. There's no space
between who he is and the work he does—never without a guitar, and always writing, listening to, or seeking out
new music. He's inhabited. I laugh out loud when I hear some of the lines in these songs—they're just so immediate
and vivid. The pathos can leave you drained, but the language and the singing is effortless and without loaded
portent—it goes down smooth. Really, were Nashville still a place where one could peddle great songs, Toth would
be the king of the place. He's a passionate singer and guitar player and inhabits the songs as he performs them with
straightforward, unpretentious and confident gravitas. These songs are a flat-out pleasure to listen to, and each one
brings further rewards on repeated listening.”—Michael Gira. Wooden Wand on tour forever upon release of this
record. LP version to follow.
OCTOPUS PROJECT “Hexadecagon” (Peek-A-Boo - BOO 1220) CD (UPC: 655035022024 - CDOCTOPHexa)
***In late 2009, THE OCTOPUS PROJECT took time to write new material and tinker with electronics. In order to
achieve their vision for a deeper, more enveloping sonic experience, they needed more than the standard two-channel
stereo audio and single projection, and decided to arrange eight speakers in a circle surrounding the audience, who in
turn surrounded the band at the center. Overhead were eight synchronized video projections. The performance
required an integrated eight-channel audio and eight-channel video system (built by the band themselves), hence the
term "hexadecagon," the geometrical name for a sixteen-sided object—in this case, a sixteen-sided audiovisual
panorama. The Octopus Project performed Hexadecagon twice for over-capacity crowds during SXSW 2010 to
emphatically positive reception. Buzzing from the success, the band dove head-first into putting the songs to tape.
After two months of recording in their home studio, they took everything to Dallas to finish and mix with JOHN
CONGLETON (St. Vincent, Explosions In the Sky, Clinic, The Walkmen), who then blew it up into a high-definition,
ultra-widescreen sonic universe. The music is written to work in layers—originally for an audio canvas of eight
channels, but here rearranged and re-orchestrated for anyone with a pair of speakers (or headphones, ideally).
Hexadecagon, more than any previous release by The Octopus Project, feels like an album in the truest sense. It's not so
much eight distinct songs as one epic suite with mood swings. CD packaged in a deluxe gatefold digipack LP
version to be released November 9, 2010. Touring North America in Fall 2010.
CRYSTAL STILTS “Shake the Shackles” (Slumberland - SLR 126) 7" (UPC: 749846012678 - 07CRYSTShak)
***CRYSTAL STILTS burst out of Brooklyn's post-punk indie scene in 2008 with a string of releases that culminated in
their fantastic debut album Alight of Night. Deftly combining the spooked '60s Texas psych of 13th Floor Elevators and
Red Crayola, the gothic blues / punk howl of Gun Club, the dark, experimental DIY of early Flying Nun / Xpressway
groups and a dash of classic '60s pop by way of early Mary Chain B-sides, Alight of Night won universal accolades and
established the band as first-class purveyors of haunting, atmospheric post-punk pop. "Shake the Shackles" is Crystal
Stilts' first release since 2009’s"Love Is a Wave" 7-inch, a great snapshot of where the band is now and a taster for their
forthcoming album, due early 2011. Driven by echoed guitar strum and droning keys, their dexterous update of '60s
garage-pop places them alongside late-'80s Paisley Underground heroes like Green on Red and later Dream
Syndicate—but the song itself is totally timeless and impossible to place anywhere but firmly in Crystal Stilts' own
unique style. On the flip, they go darker with the twilight swing of "Magnetic Moon," a bluesy chug that comes on
like some lost swamp-pop classic, all echo, guitar twang and simple tom 'n' tambourine beat. Great stuff, and
exclusive to this single.
PHIL WILSON “I Own It” (Slumberland - SLR 127) 7" (UPC: 749846012777 - 07WILSOI Ow)
***As main songwriter and singer of mid-'80s English pop legends THE JUNE BRIDES, PHIL WILSON's influence
looms large over UK guitar pop since. A bridge between early-'80s groups like Josef K and the later Creation scene,
The June Brides kept the flame burning for earnest, tuneful pop that combined fiercely-strummed, jangly guitars with
smart, literate lyrics and punk-informed energy. Following the dissolution of The June Brides, Wilson released a
handful of solo singles on Creation and Caff, and then, soured on the music business, retired. In 2008, Slumberland
released Wilson's Industrial Strength EP. His newly assembled full band presents his first new songs since his mid-'90s
solo singles. "I Own It" is the debut release from this next stage of Wilson's musical journey and will be featured on
his forthcoming album God Bless Jim Kennedy. Combining electric and acoustic guitars in a light, folky atmosphere, "I
Own It" is a brilliantly catchy tune that showcases his finely honed pop sense. Abetted by an excellent new band,
Wilson picks up right where he left off, with clever tunes simultaneously rocking and tender, tough-minded and
honest but not immune to a dash of sentimentality. "What Time Can Do" is a little more reserved, a mature meditation
on time's swift passage, and is exclusive to this single. No exports to the UK/Europe.
PURLING HISS “Public Service Announcement” (Woodsist - WOODSIST 047) LP (LPPURLIPubl)
***Resident guitarist / noise-smith MIKE POLIZZE of Philly jam-punks BIRDS OF MAYA takes another one-off
vacation with PURLING HISS. Public Service Announcement take a more song-oriented approach than Polizze's selftitled
debut LP (Permanent Records) and its follow-up, Hissteria (Richie Records). With the treble down and the tapeheads
bleeding, the LP is a montage of flange-covered tunes, in-the-red and submerged below sea level. "... reminds
me of some of my other favorite mystery rock albums, like High Speed and the Afflicted Man's Get Stoned Ezy, or any
Les Rallizes Denudes or Vermonster records—not necessarily in style or attack, but certainly in spirit. This is full-on
destroyer guitar rock, with a palpable sense of nothing to lose and everything to prove. To me, it sounds like a
serious, sincere statement—and you don't hear that every day.”—Ripley Johnson (Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips). Fall
2010 tour dates with Kurt Vile TBA.
EXCEPTER “Late” (Woodsist - WOODSIST 046) 12" (UPC: 655035003610 - LPEXCEPLate)
***The 23rd EXCEPTER record: The Late EP. The Black Rust Rush Tour of "High Noon" lore. One track recorded at
Oberlin Dionysus Disco, Fall 2009, in I-94 palindrome dub by R/N. One track recorded at 382 Jeff Street by LALA
with the TR-808. 2009-2010 edit. Two tracks live on "Presidence Day" at the Glass Lands, February 16th, 2010, by
DEREK MAXWELL, sound engineer. The Late EP returns Excepter to Woodsist. All four tracks are previously
unreleased. The Tank Tapes are included as a complimentary bonus digital download with the record. Excepter is
New York City's premiere improvisatory, vocal-and-electronics cosmic beat-box band. Whether on stage, on record or
on video, Excepter never gives the expected, and this is no exception.
JOHN WESLEY COLEMAN III “Bad Lady Goes to Jail” (Goner - 62 GONE) CD (UPC: 600385204729 -
CDCOLEMBad) ***Who is JOHN WESLEY COLEMAN? He describes himself as "garbage collector, golden boy."
Those four words might fit him best. Coleman currently makes pizzas in Austin, Texas, lives in weird territory, and is
part of an invisible, non-scene made up of his other Austin band GOLDEN BOYS, North Carolina's SPIDER BAGS
and Memphis' LIMES—all groups with their own takes on sprawling, psychedelic, country-tinged rock. The artists he
covers, largely street-level commentators of life below the poverty line, are telling; on his last album, Steal My Mind,
he did Lester Bangs and Warren Zevon songs; this time, it's Nikki Sudden. Of course, a few years back he released a
completely blasted version of George Michael's "Faith" that was seen as a piss-take but actually spoke to Wes'
mindset. Coleman has been compared to Lou Reed, Mr. Bangs, Daniel Johnston and even Pavement, who adopted
some of the spaciousness of country life after their initial spizzle grotted out. Bad Lady Goes to Jail covers a whole
variety of desires, from Coleman's desire for police to stop assaulting him to the desire to dance with his woman, to
the less-specific "Something in My Brain Wants Something." To balance the wandering heart, he also offers more
mundane observations in songs like the self-explanatory "Christians Drive Like Shit" and "My Friend Dan," a straight
celebration of one of his buddies. LP version to be released November 9th, 2010.
SLOUGH FEG “Animal Spirits” (Profound Lore - PFL 067) CD (UPC: 880270332328 - CDSLOUGAnim)
***For the last 20 years, San Francisco's SLOUGH FEG (formerly THE LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG) have carved a
niche in the underground as a unique heavy metal band. Fusing NWOBHM, traditional metal and classic rock, their
anthemic songs attract a small but devoted cult following—mainly in Europe, where their previous releases like
Twilight of the Idols and the critically acclaimed Traveler have been released and distributed. The group is led by
vocalist / guitarist MIKE SCALZI, a one-time member of HAMMERS OF MISFORTUNE and a frontman who draws
somewhat unlikely influence from storytelling performers like Robert Goulet. The Animal Spirits is Slough Feg's eighth
full-length and the first released by a North American label. A genuine classic American heavy metal record in the
making, it captures the essence of what makes the band great. For years, recognition in their homeland has escaped
Slough Feg, as their albums have been hard to come by, but with Profound Lore's release of The Animal Spirits, the
group is poised to finally get their due.
NADJA / OVO “Life and Death of a Wasp” (Vendetta - VENDETTA 41 / ADAGIO 48) LP (LPNADJALife )
***Italy's OVO and Canada's NADJA got together during the last few dogs days of summer 2009 in their adoptive city
of Berlin at Einstuerzende Neubauten's andereBaustelle Studio. With engineer BORIS WILSDORF at the board, each
duo began two songs and had the other duo finish them—BRUNO DORELLA and STEFANIA PEDRETTI adding
heavy, pounding rhythms and harsh, eerie vocals to AIDAN BAKER's and LEAH BUCKAREFF's ambient textures
and bass-heavy drones. As the four were having coffee after the sessions in the back garden, a wasp, drugged on
sugar, flew into Buckareff's coffee cup and drowned itself, traumatizing everyone at the table. The Life and Death of a
Wasp, while still heavy and retaining the signature sounds of both groups, turned out groovier and mellower than
either party expected. But this mellowness gives the songs a greater sense of presence and allows for the intricacies
and nuances of each individual's contributions to be properly heard. With a final mastering by JAMES PLOTKIN, the
album sounds simultaneously harsh and lush, aggressive and warm. No exports outside North America.
DIE! DIE! DIE! “Form” (Flying Nun - FN 504) CD (UPC: 5051865924029 - CDDIE Dform)
DIE! DIE! DIE! “Form” (Flying Nun - FN 504) LP (UPC: 5051865924012 - LPDIE Dform)
***In 2003, Dunedin teenagers ANDREW WILSON (guitar / vocals) and MICHAEL PRAIN (drums) formed DIE!
DIE! DIE! with friend HENRY OLIVER (bass). Following a self-titled debut album in 2005, the band embarked on an
ambitious series of international tours over the course of the next four years. When Oliver left in 2006, Wilson and
Prain invited LACHLAN ANDERSON to join; he appeared on the 2007's Promises, Promises, and has been with the
group ever since. Having signed with the newly revived Flying Nun label, Die! Die! Die! presents their third fulllength,
Form. Much of the album was written while holed up last winter in Dunedin. That city isn't the only Flying
Nun connection either—Form was produced by NICK ROUGHAN from The Skeptics. The recording retains plenty of
the band's trademark cataclysmic punk style, yet, with the help of Roughan, Die! Die! Die! have crafted a new, more
densely layered sound and combined it with haunting melodies. Look for the band appearing Stateside at this year's
CMJ festival in New York City. Vinyl limited to 500 copies worldwide (150 for the USA). No exports outside North
America.
GRAYSON GILMOUR “No Constellation” (Flying Nun - FN 506) CD (UPC: 5051865971221 - CDGILMONo C)
***One of Flying Nun Records' first new signings since founder Roger Shepherd's recent re-purchase, Wellingtonbased
musician GRAYSON GILMOUR has teamed up with the pioneering New Zealand label for the release of his
latest album, No Constellation. Written and performed (for the most part) by Gilmour over the course of 2009, the
album was recorded in various locales—from bedrooms to studios to his mum's house. No Constellation is a
culmination of ideas built up over the last two years, much of which Gilmour spent touring overseas with his other
band SO SO MODERN. With a pile of praise in his home country and the New Zealand Herald declaring it "a clear
contender for local record of the year," No Constellation is released in North America on compact disc and limitededition
vinyl, both accompanied by a hand-crafted lyric zine. Vinyl limited to 500 copies worldwide. No exports
outside North America. LP version to follow.
TROPICS “Soft Vision” (Planet Mu - ZIQ 287) 12" (UPC: 600116828712 - LPTROPISoft)
***The man behind TROPICS is CHRIS WARD, a 22-year-old Brit inspired by '70s jams, post-punk and whatever else
he taped in his youth. His radiant sounds of dreamy, summer nostalgia have already caught the attention of Pitchfork
and XLR8R (who have posted some of his tracks) as well as a number of bands including Little Dragon, with whom
he will collaborate on his forthcoming album. Soft Vision is an utterly gorgeous, slow-motion mix of influences that
sounds like sustained euphoria. Lead track "Give It Up" features chugging, slow-motion disco with ghostly female
vocals and chiming bell-like melodies. "Melorr" is even slower, grinding gently under the weight of its own airy
compression, adding more and more elements as the track evolves: voices, electric guitar and ghostly wisps of
melody. The EP's title track is the one that got Tropics all the attention, with its lush production and '80s feel. It
sounds like it's in 3-D: huge waves of synths shimmer and ooze through the track as it subtly grooves along to drums
that wouldn't sound out of place on an '80s stadium pop hit. No exports outside North America or Japan.
NUMAN “Race Against Time” (Planet Mu - ZIQ 284) 12" (UPC: 600116828415 - LPNUMANRace)
***Manchester's NUMAN KHAN, one of Planet Mu's latest signings, mixes dubstep and grime influences with an
idiosyncratic take on rhythm. The A-side of this four-track EP showcases the lush accordion melodies of "Race
Against Time" and the slower, disco-influenced "Photograph." The B-side opens with "Voodoo," combining grimy
bass and strings with offbeat drums to odd, driving effect. The 12-inch finishes with "XX," which sounds like a longlost
8-bit grime instrumental with deft production tweaks and effects that keep it interesting and effective. No exports

DJ RASHAD “Itz Not Rite” (Planet Mu - ZIQ 285) 12" (UPC: 600116828514 - LPDJ RAItz)
***DJ RASHAD has been instrumental to the creation and evolution of Chicago juke music. This lifelong friend to key
players on the scene blends elements of house, disco, juke and ghetto tech, and has a knack for sparse, snappy tracks
that convey a physicality and funk with spectacular precision. Rashad's notorious juke anthems have found fans far
outside the world of Chicago mix CDs. On this six-track EP, Rashad's songs cut across styles with effective, synapsesnapping
technique. "Itz Not Rite" evolves from half-speed, chopped hip hop into a double-time, hyper-rhythmic
monster. "Teknitian" is panicky in mood, playing sirens over pounding, militant drums, while "10 on Da Cush"
contrasts spacey smooth jazz samples with pumping drums and bass. The techno synths on "Who Da Coldest" recall
early Underground Resistance mixed with hard drums, claps and a lush breakdown borrowed from mid-'90s jungle.
"Baby" edits a short soul sample into a chopped up series of bumpy, rippling shapes and rhythms. Finally, "Rashad"
layers shuddering, micro-edited samples into a tight lattice; propelled by tense, aggressive drums, the feeling is
almost overbearing and alien, until the familiar voice of a soul singer rolls through the mix to tether the track to
something more real. No exports outside North America or Japan.

(STREET DATE - 10/26/2010)***Lucky Shiner, an album of beat-driven electronic music that s easy to fall in love with,
and to. In GOLD PANDA’s world, vinyl-static beats and heart-on-sleeve melancholia collide, and the results are
breathtaking. Lucky Shiner was mixed by SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO’s JAMES SHAW and recorded in two sessions at a
shady retreat in the English countryside. Decamping to an idyllic retreat means the album bears trademarks of a
pastorally hued Englishness; GP’s two years spent studying Japanese culture, language, and history at the School of
Oriental and Asian studies in Japan also find their way into the music. Opener and lead single “You” slinks along
with a stuttering vocal sample and teary-eyed chord changes in tow; “Snow & Taxis” sounds like prime dancefloor
fodder, but its cloudy string samples and chiming bells situate its melancholy closer to M83 than anything else; and
the deconstructed hip-hop of “After We Talked” employs a minimal, lo-fi drum machine and an array of ever-sogently
bitcrushed synths. RECEIVED AN 8.3 RATING FROM PITCHFORK. No Exports outside North America.

BRIAN MCBRIDE “Effective Disconnect” (Kranky - KRANK150) LP (LPMCBRIEffe)
(STREET DATE - 10/26/2010) **BRIAN MCBRIDE (one-half of the STARS OF THE LID)’s soundtrack for the
documentary film Vanishing of the Bees. From McBride: “When George and Myriam approached me to compose for
their film they suggested I concentrate on four different themes: the gloriousness of the bees, the endurance and
hardships of traditional beekeepers, pesticides and the holistic nature of non-industrial agriculture. I was especially
intrigued with the idea of combining some of their mournful aspirations with something more serene. Preparing the
music for the film, I knew that I needed to provide more built-in changes in the structure of the pieces to give George
and Myriam more flexibility. As I worked, I purposely distanced myself from the more continuous architecture
employed in my previous recordings in favor of several mini-suites. In the thinking about the music, I hoped that the
pieces would do justice to the ‘gloriousness of the bees’ theme, striving for a more overt hopeful quality. But old
traditions die-hard and the hopeful side of the music was eventually more subsumed by the lamentable. I should also
mention that if you have seen the film, this record will not contain all the music used and scored for this film. I am
incredibly honored to be a part of this project even if the final compositions turned out to be more appropriate for a
different and more forlorn film. I know you have a lot to think about in this world but if you care about food or the
world around us, you deserve to at least consider the arguments within this honest and real piece of film-making.”

TELEKINESIS “Parallel Seismic Conspiracies” (Merge - MRG 402) CD (UPC: 673855040226 - CDTELEKPara)
(STREET DATE - 10/26/2010) ***Merge Records is proud to present the new Parallel Seismic Conspiracies EP by
TELEKINESIS. These songs with the exception of “Calling All Doctors” were recorded solo “demo-style” by
MICHAEL BENJAMIN LERNER using only the microphone on his MacBook and lots of compression. “Calling All
Doctors” was a “TK v1.0 full band version” recorded at their old practice space in Seattle’s Belltown, the birthplace of
grunge. The EP’s title is a product of Lerner’s new obsession with Guided by Voices’ Alien Lanes on which “Game of
Pricks” appears. Of “The Drawback,” a cover of a Warsaw song, Lerner says “the drum fills were fun to record.” The
new Telekinesis lineup, with JASON NARDUCY on bass (ROBERT POLLARD, VERBOW) and CODY VOTOLATO
on guitar (JAGUAR LOVE, BLOOD BROTHERS) promises to bring all of the energy and fun you have come to expect
from the Telekinesis live experience! No Export to Europe, Japan and Canada.
TAMARYN “Waves” (Mexican Summer - MEX 057) LP (UPC: 184923100570 - LPTAMARWave)
***Following a spate of EPs and singles comes the debut album by TAMARYN, entitled The Waves. After collaborating
with producer REX JOHN SHELVERTON (ex-VUE, AUDIENCE, PORTRAITS OF THE PAST), Tamaryn left New
York and settled in Rex’s hometown of San Francisco to record their first full-length. Whereas Tamaryn’s earlier
material was rooted in traditional goth-psych overtones, The Waves represents an incredible step forward in terms of
her approach. These nine songs combine driving pop and lush balladry with layered, guitar-driven ethereal
atmospheres, against which Tamaryn’s voice, languid and restrained, melts against its surface. The Waves is a
masterful collision of hypnotic psychedelia and bittersweet dream pop.
DYLAN ETTINGER “New Age Outlaws” (Not Not Fun - NNF 208) LP (LPETTINNew)
***“Back in March of this year we released DR. ETTINGER’s New Age Outlaws album on cassette (NNF192) and it was
great. But artists—in case you didn’t know—ain’t easily satisfied, and so Dylan felt compelled to return to the master
tapes and further articulate the new age sci-fi ambient drift jazz vision of those pieces into something even grander
and more elegant. Sounded like a worthwhile cause to us, so here’s New Age Outlaws: The Director’s Cut, mastered
fresh for vinyl and bedazzled with new layers of robot noir synth lines, back alley cyber sax, and insomniac drum
machine heartbeats. Dylan even architected a new track sequence and re-named a couple songs. Black vinyl LPs in
jackets with stunning alien vista artwork by DAN MCPHARLIN, plus a photocopied cardstock insert.”—NNF.
Edition of 490.
ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE “Psychical” (Not Not Fun - NNF 206) LP (LPENSEMPsyc)
***“BRIAN PYLE is well-known for his enterprising shamanism as one half of Nor Cal improv gurus STARVING
WEIRDOS but when off-roading in his ENSEMBLE ECONOMIQUE buggy he seems to stumble onto even weirder
psychogenic artifacts. Psychical is Pyle’s freshest full-length and easily his most drugged and dense. Thick, humid
banks of synth-fog descend over looped cult hand-drum patterns, strangely panned waves of brainwash tones, and
snippets of third world voices mumbling about blood and marijuana. As the name half-jokingly implies, EE is 100%
Pyle’s creation intrument-wise, although his wife PHOENIX does intone some possessed doom poetry over the
crushing war drums of ‘Forever Eyes’ and TOM CARTER (of CHARALAMBIDES) cameos with some searing white
light guitar shrapnel on the creep-out raga of ‘Real Things.’ All the pieces dissolve into one another, giving Psychical a
dark-trip soundtrack mood, an upriver lost soul convoy into hostile off-radar territories, a thousand spectral voices
misting down like blackening monsoon clouds. A total haunter, and an LP we’ve been spinning many midnights
around NNF HQ. Black vinyl LPs in jackets with occult VHS artwork by MANDA BETH BROWN.”—NNF. Edition
of 470.
UMBERTO “Prophecy of the Black Widow” (Not Not Fun - NNF 212) LP (LPUMBERProp)
***“The one UMBERTO performance we had the rad fortune to bear witness to involved at least a dozen dudes, dads,
and ladies all on stage wearing sunglasses at night and shredding keyboards / keytars bathed in a sea of fog
machinery and strobe lights and extraterrestrially-costumed interpretive dancers. Shit was BEYOND. Umberto
mastermind MATT HILL allegedly went to legit music school back in the day and used to play bass for EXPO 70
(Justin/Expo released the debut Umberto tape/CDR, From The Grave, on his Sonic Meditations label) before
splintering into his current electro-satanic Goblin worship guise—and we for one can’t get enough. Prophecy Of The
Black Widow is his sophomore LP and though the badass evil Italo goth-synth horror-score blueprint of Grave remains,
the main variation is subtle vibe-shift from ‘70s Argento/Carpenter-isms into more early/mid-’80s new wave creepscapes.
There’s still plenty of eerie nightmare keyboard riffs and vintage witch-disco breakouts but the synths squelch
with more of a neon retrofuturist bent and there’s even one brazenly feelgood soaring-into-the-sunset closing credits
anthem (the literally-titled ‘Everything Is Going To Be Okay’). Whatever prophecy Prophecy is foretelling, we’re on
board. Black vinyl LPs in jackets with sick fake-3D lettering and art by SETH JOHNSON.”—NNF. Edition of 485.
DRUGS DRAGONS “Drugs Dragons” (Dusty Medical - DMR 24) LP (LPDRUGSDrug)
***“The truly amazing thing about Milwaukee, WI's DRUGS DRAGONS is how close they come to distilling the
essence of ‘rock’ into a recording. Live, they're intense and unpredictable. Sweat, blood, and beer appear in equal
measure at their shows, and, like all good rock bands, volume is a necessary ingredient. Astoundingly, their new selftitled
LP is easily the equal of their live performance, capturing the energy and vitriol of vocalist PUKE DRUGS’
sweaty snarl, as well as guitarist TONY SAGGER’s chunky chording and the on-the-edge rhythm section of bassist
ZORACH DRAGONS and drummer ERRORIC MILDEW. Drugs Dragons formed in spring 2009 from the remnants
of Milwaukee's beloved NIGHT TERRORS. Although their stated influences range from early Alice Cooper, the
Cramps and the Dead Boys to such modern icons as Clone Defects and the A-Frames, Drugs Dragons have forged
their own path among the two million or so bands currently active. They're not interested in climbing the charts; they
want to get in your face. And this record will do exactly that.”—Keith Brammer
FUCKING WRATH “Terra Fire” (Tee Pee - TPE 123) LP (UPC: 707239012315 - LPFUCKITerr)
***THE FUCKING WRATH was conceived in Montalvo, California by three long-time friends who worked in the
same record store and lived on the same street. While the members had each been playing in dedicated bands for
more than ten years, they initially formed T.F.W. as a result of jamming for fun after work. Since their first gig in
November of 2005, they have gone on to play a continual string of shows that hasn't stopped yet. The band recorded
their first album Season Of Evil in the summer of 2006 and In true DIY fashion paid for the recording themselves. After
numerous shows playing with a ride range of bands including Tragedy, Blue Cheer, High On Fire and the
Adolescents, their mix of punk/stoner metal/rock n’ roll caught the attention of Goodfellow and Challenge The
Throne Records who released Seasons Of Evil in August of 2007. With rave reviews from print and online zines, the
group embarked on two nationwide tours and several west coast ventures. The Fucking Wrath now averages close to
150 shows per year with no sign of slowing down. Fueled by significant doses of THC, their songs are simultaneously
heavy and fast, while cleverly infused with slower, droned-down riffs and sudden timing changes. The band's sound
can be described as an amalgamation of groups such as Discharge, Black Flag, Melvins and Kill 'em All era Metallica.
PROTEX “Strange Obsession” (Sing Sing - SING 016) LP (UPC: 845350025255 - LPPROTEStra)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! “What you hold in your hands has long been the holy grail of fervent record collectors
worldwide. Rumors have abound that this album had been released in Holland and or that there were a small
number of white label test pressings in existence but none of these claims have ever been substantiated. As far as I can
ascertain, this is the first time that ten of these tracks have become commercially available anywhere. The fruits of
these CHAS CHANDLER sessions had only been previously hinted at with the bands final singles and the track ‘All I
Wanna Do Is Rock ‘N’ Roll’ that appeared on the American only Polydor compilation album Made In Britain. The
Northern Ireland punk scene of the late 1970s had its own very distinctive sound. The bands from Northern Ireland
were much younger than their English counterparts and were totally devoid of pretence and trickery. The stripped
down to basics ethos of punk was evident in the ‘Belfast’ sound. It was primitive and elemental but there was a huge
amount of strong melodies and good lyrics thrown into the mix too. For me this release only reinforces that view
further.”— Sean O'Neill (co-author of It Makes You Wanna Spit!)
DAVILA 666 “12-inch EP” (Rob’s House - RHR 058) 12" (LPDAVIL12-i)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! “DAVILA 666 are in full-on take no prisoners mode. We asked them for a couple songs for a

instantly addicting but unlike other Puerto Rican imports consumption is no crime, it's encouraged! On top of that
their live show is one of the best around and their constant touring has left a path of amazed fans. It’s no wonder that
when we booked the Atlanta Mess Around the legendary Urinals asked specifically not to be placed after Davila 666
in the lineup!! Who in their right mind would want to follow Davila 666?”—666 pressed.

mainstream consciousness, gaining attention for their punk rock sensibilities and their raucous live shows driven by
front woman MARISSA PATERNOSTER’s famed guitar heroics. On their new album, Castle Talk, the trio proves their
abilities as more than just a pint-sized guitar shredder. Castle Talk showcases their growth together as a unit, as a

PEPE WISMEER “Between Sheep and Pigs” (Beta-Lactam Ring - MT 219) DBL.CD (UPC: 753907158724 -
CDWISMEBetw) ***Pigs, in there? Yes, but if you count them, they will become sheep, which is appropriate as PEPE
WISMEER’s music is like drifting into a dream. His hushed vocals sigh just beneath the melody, as if he were in
camera with woodland deities. The music moves with patient strides, sometimes swelling to sudden crescendos,
accompanied by electronic scrapes and coughs. A slightly damaged, spare, chamber folk-psych, whose distant
cousins can be found in the darkly tender moments infused in early Psychic TV/Current 93/Coil, or in the
atmospheric postures of Antony & the Johnsons. Between Sheep and Pigs, like actual sheep and pigs, is a real grower.
For fans of Current 93, Coil, Death In June, Legendary Pink Dots, Nurse With Wound. First edition of 500 includes a
bonus CD.

was born. The lineup became solidified with the addition of KENT HOWARD (AMERICANS IN FRANCE), whose
melodic and powerful bass lines gave the group its anchor. Providing the proverbial icing to the group’s cake was
NATHAN TOBEN, a talented multi-instrumentalist who brought a youthful enthusiasm and a keen ear for guitar and
keyboard work that deftly complemented Rob’s songs. In early 2010 they got together with engineer WILLIAM
EVANS of Raleigh based garage band Whatever Brains. They assembled a simple recording setup and tracked all of
sorry, earth mostly live in the basement of Rob’s Durham home. Sorry, Earth is an explosive sonic document that
bristles at the edges with tension; a melodic menagerie of soaring guitars, pummeling drums and sardonic lyrics. In
some ways the record may be about finding one’s place in a world gone awry and the struggle to contain self
destructive behaviors.
TRANSPORTATION “Amusement Park” (Odessa - ODE 10) CD (UPC: 616892110064 - CDTRANSAmus)
***“TRANSPORTATION are one of the best live bands Chapel Hill has to offer, so we are pleased to be presenting
this, their second official release. Amusement Park finds the trio simplifying things and showcasing what they do
best—rock, riffs, hooks, and damn good songs. What can we say to aptly describe the hot-as-hell fretwork of
STEPHEN MURTAUGH? The to-die-for-Emmit Rhodes-by-way-of Phil Lynnot voice of ROBERT SCRUGGS? The
exploding landmine drumming of BEN DUNLAP? Nothing that hasn't been said already—it's best to hear it for
yourself.”—Odessa. Recorded by JERRY KEE at Duck Kee Studio.
LIL B “Rain in England” (Weird Forest - WEIRD 57) CD (UPC: 656605798820 - CDLIL Brain)
LIL B “Rain in England” (Weird Forest - WEIRD 57) DBL.LP (LPLIL Brain)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! “Just who is LIL B? The Based God has scored so many Youtube hits and crammed so many
full length albums under his belt it can be hard for youngbloods to get a handle on what this rap savant is all about. Is
he the internet sensation with a hundred girls on his dick? Or could he be the leading light of a new hip hop
underground, one that has finally wrenched itself from the grubby backpacks and the cynicism of the mid 1990s? He's
both, and with Rain in England the story gets even more mysterious and far more incomprehensible. Those already up
to speed on B's molasses-beats and stream-of-consciousness ('based') flow will think they got him pegged. Internet
hype and heavy tunes all ill-mannered, hungry and mercilessly lo-fidelity, and unafraid to make a beef over Twitter.
Rain in England shows an antithesis to this character, a tempered side to his ADD report card. Part new-age ambient
and part hip hop, the record is uncharacteristically fluid, with B's singular rhymes falling perfectly into a bed of
syrupy electronics. B never falls into the trap of allowing himself to get too abstractedly wordy, yet we always retain
the sense that he's not your typical street rapper.”—John Twells
MARK MCGUIRE “Living With Yourself” (Editions Mego - EMEGO 107) LP (UPC: 9120020388153 -
LPMCGUILivi) ***BACK IN STOCK!!! MARK MCGUIRE operates chiefly as guitarist in the legendary EMERALDS;
however, he also has racked up an impressive set of solo releases over the last few years (albeit mainly in small- to
micro- print runs). Living With Yourself is his new album and Editions Mego hope to meet any demand which may
arise from this fine selection of modern crafted guitar tunes. Focusing on his family, early friendships and the
problems that inevitably develop through years of knowing someone, it takes McGuire's sound even further out, and
contains some of his most accomplished songs to-date. The opening track is a fine example of McGuire's magical
technique of taking a lone acoustic guitar then transforming the track into bliss-out electro wash looping off into the
distance. And tracks like "Clouds Rolling In" and "Brain Storm" take off where such McGuire classics as "The Marfa
Lights" (which incidentally is planned for a future reissue) left off. While connoisseurs of his sound will find all they
desire in here, many superb surprises await around every corner. These are songs that cruise, bubble and rise to the
top.
DEUX “Decadence” (Minimal Wave - MW 022) LP (LPDEUXDeca)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! “Minimal Wave is proud to present a full length LP by French duo DEUX. GERARD
PELLETIER and CATI TETE formed Deux after meeting in Lyon in 1981. Their music can be described as minimal
synth with stripped down rhythm compositions and suitably cold duets. Their influences are a perfect blend of
Kraftwerk and French synthpop. Between 1983 and 1992, they released a cassette and several rare singles. They also
appeared on the various artists BIPP LP (2006) and most recently on The Minimal Wave Tapes: Vol 1 LP. The Decadence
LP features selections of their old material, newly remastered. It is a hand-numbered edition, pressed on 180-gram
vinyl and housed in a heavy matte jacket.”
DAS DING “HSTA” (Minimal Wave - MW 019) LP (LPDAS DHSTA)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! “A full length album by Dutch electro pioneer, DAS DING. Das Ding is DANNY BOSTEN,
who was active in the early 1980s releasing his music and friends’ music via his own cassette label called Tear Apart
Tapes. While studying graphic design in art school, he designed all the tape covers himself. Meanwhile, he recorded
his own music as Das Ding. Powerful dark electro, some tracks are quite addictive and danceable while others are
more for at home listening enjoyment. The dancefloor killer is somewhere between Reassurance Ritual and H.S.T.A.
The record features lovingly remastered tracks, and is pressed on 180-gram vinyl with a printed inner sleeve
featuring Danny's drawings.”

band’s fourth record in the continuing 12 year cycle and adds to it’s evolving retinue of guest musicians. The patient
and building Year of the Ox features NIKA ROSA DANILOVA of ZOLA JESUS for a guest vocal passage, and
Toronto’s string quartet, NEW STRINGS OLD PUPPETS. The B-side “Solomon’s Song,” a gothic vampire love tribute
to Twilight, features a 5-minute saxophone solo from AERIN FOGEL of TGE BITTERS. and heavy synthing from
TRUST. No Export to Canada.

GAMITS “Parts” (Paper + Plastick / Suburban Home - PP 070) CD (UPC: 633757225220 - CDGAMITPart)
***When THE GAMITS disbanded in 2004, they went out on top. At a sold out show in Denver, CO, they bid farewell
to the city, the fans, old tunes, and new classics from their second full-length entitled Antidote. Over the 10-year lifespan
of the band, their music had matured from a pop punk band to that of a melodic rock trio that drew from varied
influences with intricate guitar work, thoughtful lyrics, and beautifully simple song structure. In 2009, it all started
over with a phone call from Japan. The country that once embraced The Gamits wanted a reunion tour. With the idea
planted firmly in frontman CHRIS FOGAL’s mind, he called SCOTT WEIGEL and FORREST BARTOSH to pick up
the bass and drum duties and take a nice paid vacation to Tokyo. But the idea grew from a simple reunion tour into a
brand new album. Parts was completed in July at Fogal's Black In Bluhm studio in Denver. This album is the next step
forward for a band who may not have played together for a while, but must have been listening. The foundation of
melodic rock is still the same, but this time taking on more of an edge. Vocally, the album is a departure from Fogal's
sticky sweet tone of the past, and walks toward a gruffness reminiscent of Blake from Jawbreaker or Eric from
Dillinger Four. All the hooks are there, but they still leave room for texture through time changes and hard rock beats.
Parts is the logical next step for a band that every Gamits fan loves and everyone else hasn't heard yet.
WHY BE SOMETHING THAT YOU’RE NOT “Detroit Hardcore 1979-1985” (Revelation - REVBKS 04) BOOK
(UPC: 97818897039 - MGWHY Bdetr) ***NOW AVAILABLE!!! Author TONY RETTMAN’s Why Be Something That
You’re Not chronicles the first wave of Detroit hardcore from its origins in the late seventies to its demise in the mideighties.
Through a combination of oral history and extensive imagery, the book proves that even though the
Southern California beach towns might have created the look and style of hardcore punk, it was the Detroit scene—
along with a handful of other cities across the country—that cultivated the music’s grassroots aesthetic before most
cultural hot spots around the globe even knew what the music was about. The book includes interviews with
members of THE FIX, VIOLENT APATHY, NEGATIVE APPROACH, NECROS, PAGANS, BORED YOUTH, and LSEVEN,
along with other people who had a hand in the early hardcore scene like IAN MACKAYE (MINOR
THREAT), TESCO VEE and DAVE STIMSON (Touch & Go Fanzine).

GREATEST HITS “Danse Pop” (Olde English Spelling Bee - OESB 702) 7" (07GREATDans)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! “Dance pop euphoria. Lead track "Danse Pop" dives right into what makes GREATEST HITS
great, melding pulverizing rhythms, singsong vocals, and a bouncing bass into one monster of a club jam. It kicks off
muffled for a few seconds, like listening to a tape of songs you recorded off the radio when you were old enough to
think it was actually a good idea. Then it takes off, greeting its ancestors with open arms, but at the same time gazing
past them. "Danse Pop" updates a hyperactive and robotic electro sound of decades past by injecting a completely
relatable, human, even romantic element. The only problem? It's over after 122 seconds.” Four Songs.
TOTAL CONTROL “s/t” (Total Control - AARGHT 007) 7" (07TOTALs/t)
***The band pressed reissue of the TOTAL CONTROL debut was originally released in 2008 on Aussie Label Aarght!
(home to Eddy Current Suppression Ring, UV Race et al.). Two sides of synth-driven punk that brings to mind
Nervous Gender and the Units but also Digital Leather. The band just completed a US tour with UV Race (including
a stop at Gonerfest). Four songs. 300 copies. Last chance.
PINE HILL HAINTS “Black Casket” (Razorcake - RZCR 412) 7" (07PINE Blac)
***Recorded in the Cali Mucho studio in San Pedro, CA in February of 2010, THE PINE HILL HAINTS offer four
more sincerely haunting tunes that once again display the amazing musicianship that they've become known for.
Deeply rooted in lessons learned and histories re-visited, this band continues to travel the country playing to diverse
audiences and creating authentic, bone- chilling traditional country/folk music for those willing to reject the
limitations and boundaries of "scenes" and genres.
FLIPS “I Just Don’t Know Where I Stand” (HoZac - HZR 072) 7" (07FLIPSI Ju)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! At this very moment, THE FLIPS are one of the absolute best, true, all-female bands to fully
capture the spine-tingling effervescence and true songwriting prowess of the first wave of Girl Group Sounds. Based
in Milwaukee and only making rare live appearances periodically, The Flips are an unmatched six-piece super group
of songwriters and talented ladies who have straddled the raw essence of the Brill Building's top-notch harmonies,
snapping hooks and chest-pounding desperation and they've cranked out three songs presented here that are truly
monumental. Featuring members of PLEXI 3, STICKS ‘N STONES, SUGAR STEMS, and JANE DOE & THE
COPHATERS, The Flips have the perfect chops and elaborately sophisticated pop execution that's always sorely
lacking in pop music these days.
PIGEONS “Visions of the Valley” (Soft Abuse - SAB 043) 7" (07PIGEOVisi) (STREET DATE - 10/26/2010)
***This two-song platter find PIGEONS pushing farther into tripped out pop songwriting, narrowly clinging to their
inner art rock leanings. Dusty, west coast, flowery pysch pop and placid, melancholy blues mysticism fill these
grooves. Recorded by CLARK & WEDNESDAY in the Bronx and Paris, and comes in a hand printed sleeve.
COASTING “Coasting” (Group Tightener - GT 05) 7" (07COASTCoas)
***BACK IN STOCK!!! The anticipated second single from Brooklyn female drums and guitar duo COASTING.
Includes the cut “Coasting,” backed with the track “Hots For Teacher.” Have been featured on Pitchfork, GvsB,
Stereogum, and just about every other music related rumpus on the web.
