Jagged [Knarf Skipson] : Biasca EP : Bonzzaj : 12"
Six months after the successful release of Jagged's EP "Ten to Twelve"on Bonzzaj Recordings, we now present the follow-up single "Biasca" with a remix from Berlin based producer Knarf Skipson, who has previously released on labels like Quintessentials, Sthml and Deep Vibes. This EP includes four deep yet raw tracks somewhere between jacking Chicago and Detroit House. The first track "Biasca" is named after a small town lying at the junction of three valleys in the Italian corner of Switzerland, where wooded mountains rise 1500m to the sky. "Biasca" immediately starts with bumping vibes and lead on in a Detroit flavour. Once again the trademark sound of Jagged comes to the fore: analogue equipment and MPC. From Guttanen's glaciers spring the river Aare. It's the last village before the Grimsel Pass, and its name has its origins in the phrase ze den guoten tannen (by the good firs). It's a reminder of happiness. This second track is a soulful vocal house number with the lovely voice of Berne based singer Lily Yellow. Deeper House with wonderful Fender Rhodes and kicking bass drums and snares. "Varen" is an idyllic spot in the glacier-covered canton of Valais. It is the source of some of the finest wine in Switzerland, to perfectly accompany the local speciality, raclette. Through here flows the River Rhône all the way to Lake Geneva. Driving beats, minor chords, melodic synths and eclectic samples mark this third track on the EP. Knarf shows with his remix his definition of house music: Percussive workouts, old school 4/4 beats and cool vocal samples. Driving rhythms with clear references to US American house music such as Moodyman or Theo Parrish. In a nutshell, here's some old shit for new times. Dixie Yure is the incarnation of contemporary Oldschool House music from Seville. After some digital only releases it is about time for some haptic experience. With the 10" record "Show Me Satisfaction" on Berlin-based label Fenou his sound is rotating on turntables for the first time. Monotonous minimalism ain't Dixie Yure's world. The sound tends more towards 2Step and builds a homogeneous and pleasant mixture with classical House elements and vocal parts. You just can't deny yourself dancing the 'chicken dance' and stepping like hell! Thanks to the funky improvisations extending over the whole track you won't get bored even after listening to "Show Me" for the hundredth time. The A-Side is just fun - in the club as well as on your couch. You won't miss the low-pitched vocals on the B-Side either as they are typical for the spanish producer. "Satisfaction" is a little more reduced than "Show Me" but is enhanced with jazz elements such as pianos and saxophones. It shows that wind instruments in electronic music don't have to be annoying tribal elements. 'Matter' is the second EP from Kenton Slash Demon's 'The Schwarzschild Solution' trilogy and features a remix from much hyped Runaways. It took young Schwarzschild only a month to solve them, shortly before he died from a rare decease contracted in battle during WW1. The most prominent result consequential to the solutions was the black hole, the gravitational equivalent of a super sponge. This complex theory is the symbolic cornerstone and namesake of Kenton Slash Demon's trilogy of EP releases on Tartelet Records, where the second release - 'Matter' - finally has descended from orbit. Following in the trails of the wildly successful 'Sun EP' released in August 2010, 'Matter' continues the story with both an amazing original and an interstellar interpretation from New York's Runaways. 'Matter' is beyond ambitious - a deeply natural constellation of disco and house, sprinkled with emotionally charged lyrics and a hint of that special Tartelet strangeness. Looping and cutting clips of synth-stabs and murmuring voices solidifies the beat in typical Kenton Slash Demon style, while the groove shapes the morphing and modulating melody. To top it off, Malthe Fischer from danish psych pop outfit "Oh No Ono" (Leaf Label) add his mystic vocals and delivers a final signature to the track. Matter is epic, simply put - a shatter storm of touching chord-changes that drags people restlessly to the dance floor- not very unlike how Schwarzschild's famed black hole drags matter into the darkest of voids.Runaway's remix is in a much darker vein, humming along with nebulous bleeps and sparkling blobs from outer space. Pads sporadically burst through the groove after being submerged in the deepness of the universe, and metallic extraterrestrial voices convey simultaneous stratum of beauty and fear. An insistent bass pulse provides a structure for the snappy post-garage percussion to build into a lurching, lunging rhythm. Very original, and very infectious. Ekkohaus' remix is a focused, driving deep house groove, shaped around lush, rounded stabs and heavily-filtered synths. Claps and snare emerge from the beautifully balanced mix to give the track a real disco kick. The third track on the EP Zero Gravity has a more back-to-basics feel. The bassline is dubby, but the percussion has a classic French Touch feel that gives the track real movement. A Rhodes-like synth line wraps itself round the track like a warm fuzzy blanket. Morning Factory's second Yore EP, after their Critically acclaimed debut ep , Forgotten Moments, is clearly bursting of Talent once again and without a doubt. Once again we've got a hard-grooving four-tracker from Netherlands duo Jean-Pierre van der Leeuw and Jozef Lemmens (aka Loves Got Me High and Enzovoort) that's a match for anything else in the Yore discography. Opener "Maiden Voyage" is classic Morning Factory, an ever-so-tight house jam that twists and turns beatifically for eight rapturous minutes. A parade of glorious sounds and euphoric build-ups, the track's filled with syncopated drum breaks, chunky chords, and synthetic strings, with all of it powered by an effervescent groove and quite a dash of acid. Darker undercurrents run through "Last March of the Ants" when church organ chords stretch themselves across a windswept, broken beat shuffle. Despite the gothic atmsopherics, the tune's house boogie still goes deep when a jazzy vibe subtly creeps in and the stepping groove grows in forcefulness. Creamy organ sounds also course through "Radioshow," which takes a nostalgic glance backward ("those days are gone now…") to a golden age where something like "Green Onions" had a chance of getting played on the radio. A saxophone licks at the tune's flames as its driving funk pulse kicks into gear, but the EP's most body-shaking cut arrives last in the form of "Cherish," a charging tech-house hellraiser animated by broiling bass lines and shotgun claps and sweetened with Rhodes kisses. Jneiro Jarel returns with a new Brazilian-inspired LP for Kindred Spirits. Fauna follows up his debut album Three Piece Puzzle from 2005, and since then Jneiro has gone on to work with artists such as TV on the Radio, MF DOOM, Khujo Goodie from the Goodie Mob, as well as with his own groups and aliases like The Shape of Broad Minds, Dr Who Dat?, and Capital Peoples. Jneiro has always had a Brazilian streak to his music, dating back to Dr Who Dat's Beat Journey, with the cover decked out in the same colours as the Brazilian flag and the standout track Braziliant Thought. But finally with Fauna he gets to create a whole album inspired by the home of the Seleção. Giving credit to his mother for turning him onto Sérgio Mendes, Tom Jobim, and Caetano Veloso at an early age, it was an inspired dig through the record collection of KS label don KC tha Funkaholic, as well as discovering Arthur Verocai and Zuco 103, that put him in the headspace to compose most of Fauna over a three month period. But while Jneiro was fired up by the melodies and rhythms of Brazil, the record is more than just a collection of beats and dusty samples. Dedicated to conservation, Fauna is made for the plants and wildlife in Brazil, many of them endangered and all of which have such a huge impact on the planet's ecosystem. Scattered throughout the LP are the sounds of the rainforest and the Amazon, as tropical birds calls mix with dubby synths and cone-shaking sub bass, and phased vocals are panned around beats and Candomblé rhythms. Jneiro has created a unique sense of space on Fauna, which is at once hypnotic and spiritual, while also deep in the kind of studio-wizardry which has informed the stylings of so many beat producers around the world in recent years. "It's both outer space and down-to-earth", Jneiro says. In the same tradition as sci-fi writer Braulio Tavares, and Paraiban musician Totonho, Jneiro has created a slice of futuristic beat science rooted in Brazilian traditions, brimming with a real sense of community and ecological responsibility.
